ABBEY INFORMATION SYSTEMS SKY 2.
INTRODUCTION
SKY.EXE is descended from the famed TONITE. It is specific
for the MS-DOS/OS-2 computer. It is fast and flexible.
As with most programs of this kind, SKY.EXE came into
existence to fill the particular needs of the author, who is
a photographer. This program may not meet the exacting
scholarly demands of professional astronomers, but it is
quick, easy to use, and it works.
FILES PROVIDED
The following files are to be found in the self-extracting
archive, SKYARC.EXE:
READ.ME A descriptive file.
SKY.DOC Documentation for SKY.EXE
SKY.EXE The SKY program itself.
If any of these files are missing, please contact the author.
COPYRIGHT NOTICE AND LICENSE
SKY.EXE is a gift to you from the author, subject to the
terms of this license. SKY.EXE is not in the public domain.
It is not shareware. This program, and its accompanying
documentation, are copyrighted under the laws of the United
States of America.
You are licensed to use this program for personal, non-
commercial, purposes.
You may not distribute SKY.EXE to others without the permis-
sion of the author.
WARRANTY
This program, and it's accompanying documentation, is without
warranty, express or implied. This includes warranties of
merchantability or suitability for intended purpose. It is
supplied "as is." The author will not be held liable for any
consequental damages.
ABBEY INFORMATION SYSTEMS SKY 3.
SKY.EXE is written for the IBM computers, and close clones.
It requires a minimum of 256 K Random Access Memory to load
and run. It will run with MS-DOS 2.11, however version 3.x
is recommended.
The program can be run from a floppy-disk drive or from a
hard disk.
SKY.EXE automatically recognizes and supports monochrome,
Hercules, CGA, EGA, Super EGA, and VGA graphics adapters.
Snow checking is available through a command line switch.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
SKY.EXE prompts for input of the date, or dates, for which
information is desired. It then calculates and displays
various combinations of the following data:
Times of Sunrise and Sunset
Times of Moonrise and Moonset
Age of the Moon in days
Phase of the Moon
Altitude and Azimuth of the Sun
Altitude and Azimuth of the Moon
Path of the Sun and Moon across the sky
Printouts of this information are provided if required. If
desired, any of the calculations can be made for a range of
dates.
INSTALLING THE PROGRAM
De-archiving the program.
This program is supplied as a self-extracting archive, pro-
duced with the LHARC program. To extract the files, merely
type "SKYARC" (without the quotation marks). No other soft-
ware is required to perform the extraction.
ABBEY INFORMATION SYSTEMS SKY 4.
Floppy Disk Installation.
Insert the floppy disk containing the program into the disk
drive.
Hard Disk Installation.
Copy the all of the program files onto the hard disk.
Setup.
The program is able to determine its location on a hard disk.
This allows it to be run from any sub-directory without
having to keep multiple CFG files. This feature requires DOS
version 3.0 or later. If your DOS version is earlier than
this, the program will function, but you will have to make
the directory in which it resides the default directory
before the program is run.
When the program is first run, it searches it's own directory
for a configuration file, SKY.CFG. If it does not find
this file it builds one, prompting the user for the required
information. Be prepared to enter your latitude, longitude,
and time zone. IF YOUR LOCATION IS IN THE UNITED STATES,
YOUR LONGITUDE IS NEGATIVE (-). Approximate values are ade-
quate, because this is not a precision program.
Daylight Savings Time is automatically adjusted for when
appropriate. You will be asked if your area observes this
perverse system.
SKY allows you to customize the program for your printer.
Setup asks you for a printer number. Values of 1 through 4
are accepted. These correspond to ports LPT1 through LPT4.
The number of lines per page for your printer can also be
specified. This value must be greater than 11 because of the
space required for the margins and header. If you specify a
number in this field, the printer will skip over the perfora-
tions at the end of each page, and will print a new header at
the top of each page. If you specify a value of 0, the
printout will be continuous, with only one header (at the top
of the first page).
SKY.EXE will automatically customize itself for your
monitor.

OPERATION
Running the program.
If the directory (or disk) which contains the program is in
the PATH, type "SKY" (without the quotation marks).
Otherwise, move to the directory containing the program, and
type "SKY".
The operation of the program is fully documented by help
screens. These are available from any of the program screens
by pressing F1.
Definitions of the various quantities which are calculated,
and information on the daily motions of the Sun and Moon are
given on the definition screens, which are available by
pressing F3.
Command line switches.
This version of SKY uses three command line switches. They
are:
/C (C)onfigure. Forces reconfiguration of
the program.
/M (M)onochrome. Optimizes the program
for monochrome systems.
/S (S)now checking. The program normally
turns snow checking off for color
systems. This increases the program's
speed. Use this switch if you have a
CGA monitor, and snow checking is
required.
To use a command line switch, run the program as follows:
SKY /S
The "C" (or "M", or "S") may be preceded by a "/", "-",
or a space (" ").

CREDITS
SKY.EXE was written with Microsoft Professional Development
System, Version 7. It employs extensive assembly language
subroutines from MicroHelp's Mach 2 and QB/Pro libraries.
The suggestions and comments of Richard Hess were invaluable
in the preparation of Version 1.4.
